Clothing Is a Real-Life Thing: Try It On

Clothing is one of the few things we buy that is quite literally designed to live on our bodies. So why do we so often judge it from a photograph?

Online shopping is convenient, but a photograph can only tell you so much. You can see the colour. You can see the silhouette. You can get an idea of the styling. But you can't feel the fabric, understand the weight, check the construction or know how something actually sits on your body until you experience it in real life.

And fit matters.

Two shirts can be the same size and fit completely differently. Two pairs of jeans can have the same waist measurement but sit differently through the rise, thigh and leg. A jacket might look incredible on a model but feel completely wrong when you put it on yourself.

That is why we believe there is still something important about buying clothing in person.

Try it on. Turn around. Sit down. Move your arms. Tuck it in. Leave it out. Put a jacket over it. See how the fabric moves. See whether the proportions actually work for you.

Because sometimes the piece you almost walked past is the one that looks completely different once it's on.

There's also something about discovering clothing this way that we think has been lost. You aren't searching for one very specific item. You're looking. You're feeling. You're trying things on. You might find a colour you wouldn't normally wear, a silhouette you didn't expect to like, or a fabric you've never considered before.

That's where personal style gets interesting.

At Old Soul Vintage, we don't think clothing should simply look good hanging on a rack or appearing on a screen. It should work in real life. It should feel good, fit properly and make sense when you actually put it on.

Because the best way to know if something is right for you is still pretty simple.

Put it on.

See how it feels.

Then decide.
